Xaxaba Camp

Set on a private island deep within the Okavango Delta, opposite the legendary Chief’s Island, Xaxaba Camp is a rustic, community-run safari retreat that offers an authentic wilderness experience for adventurous souls. Built and supported by the local Xaxaba community, this camp blends simplicity with connection—to both nature and culture—creating a meaningful Delta encounter.

Accommodations:
Xaxaba Camp offers six Meru-style safari tents, each raised on wooden platforms and thoughtfully positioned in one of three seasonal locations on the island for the best wildlife access. Each tent sleeps two guests and features basic but comfortable amenities: raised stretchers, fresh linens, en-suite canvas bathrooms equipped with eco-friendly “bucket” showers, and bush toilets. There are standing hand basins refreshed regularly, plus shaded seating areas outside each tent. Electricity is unavailable—lanterns are provided, and guests are advised to bring flashlights and extra batteries.

Main Camp Area:
The heart of Xaxaba Camp is an open lounge and communal area, lit by lantern and campfire glow. It operates with minimal environmental impact—no permanent infrastructure and no electricity—and is carefully set up before guest arrival and taken down afterward. The ambiance is relaxed and immersive, inviting shared stories, sundowners, and quiet contemplation under the stars.

Activities:
Centered around water-based exploration and responsible adventure, Xaxaba Camp offers:

  • Walking Safaris to Chief’s Island: Explore footpaths on Chief’s Island with knowledgeable guides—if water levels permit, guests might even enjoy a safe swim in pristine waters.

  • Mokoro Trips: Glide silently through narrow Delta channels in traditional dugout canoes, for an intimate wildlife encounter.

  • Boat Safaris: Discover hidden lagoons and waterways by motorboat, ideal for spotting hippos, elephants, and aquatic birdlife.

  • Sundowner Moments: Enjoy unforgettable evenings at scenic riverbank spots—perfect for golden-hour views and occasional elephant crossings when marula trees fruit nearby.

Wildlife & Habitat:
Located in a dynamic, water-rich ecosystem, Xaxaba Camp offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Expect to see large herds of elephants, lechwe, zebra, buffalo, and smaller antelope—not to mention elusive predators like lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, and hyena. The area also supports a rich diversity of birdlife, including fish eagles and migratory species, creating a vibrant Delta tapestry.

Additional Highlights:

  • Community-Driven: Operated by the local Xaxaba community, the camp fosters authentic cultural connection and supports grassroots tourism.

  • Eco-Conscious & Low Impact: No electricity, solar-none, minimal infrastructure, and a nomadic setup all contribute to a truly eco-sensitive experience.

  • Truly Remote: Accessible by light aircraft to Xaxaba Airstrip, followed by a scenic boat transfer—it’s an escape fully immersed in wild solitude.

Xaxaba Camp offers an unpolished, deeply immersive Okavango experience—ideal for guests who value simplicity, community-led travel, and meaningful connection to Delta landscapes.
